José Toj

José Oswaldo López Toj is an educator and sociolinguist from the community of Pachica, Rabinal, Baja Verapaz. He is a Bilingual Intercultural Early Childhood Education teacher and has pursued higher studies in Applied Sociolinguistics at Universidad Mariano Gálvez. This academic background has shaped his commitment to strengthening bilingual education and advancing community development in Indigenous contexts.

He currently works with Prodessa, where he contributes to the education sector by supporting and strengthening the pedagogical capacities of primary and secondary school teachers. His work promotes culturally relevant educational practices and the advancement of bilingual intercultural education processes.

He serves on the Board of Directors of Voces y Manos as Treasurer, where he contributes to the organization’s administrative and financial management. In this role, he supports processes that promote transparency, institutional efficiency, and organizational strengthening.

Throughout his career, he has collaborated with internationally recognized organizations such as Cáritas Verapaz, USAID, and Catholic Relief Services (CRS), contributing to initiatives focused on food security, climate resilience, and community development. In addition to his fluency in the Maya Achí language, he has training in translation and interpretation, permaculture, and leadership, enabling him to contribute to educational and social processes through a holistic, intercultural approach grounded in a strong commitment to communities.
